Storage in the Cloud: The Future is Now?
The value and volume of business data is increasing at an exponential rate. Storing, backing up and recovering data - once considered a purely administrative task - has become a C-level issue due to compliance and business continuity requirements. Cloud-based solutions are once again being popularized by both vendors and the media. Are cloud-based storage, backup and recovery solutions - originally popularized during the dot com boom - ready for prime time and viable for law firms and legal departments of all sizes? This panel presentation will discuss why the time is now right for the cloud-based solutions, the technical advantages of storage on the grid, the value of storage on demand, and the benefits for compliance and business continuity realized by using offsite storage and replication

Social Networking: Keeping It Secure
According to the latest survey statistics, law firms and law departments are beginning to adopt social networking tools, such as Facebook, Linkedin, instant messaging, and even Twitter, for a variety of reasons, from marketing to collaboration between lawyers and clients. But to protect the organization, lawyers, executives, and IT staff must not only be careful about what is said via these sites, but the security of the sites themselves and the internal
infrastructure that supports social networking.

Our panel of experts will help you identify -- and address -- these security issues so that your organization can fully exploit these new technologies.

E-mail Management: Searching for the Holy Grail
Thorough, safe and efficient e-mail management is an important objective for any organization. In theory, you build the system and they will come. In practice, compelling legal professionals to file email is a Herculean task, for which you must employ the right mix of tools, training and policies (enforced from the top, of course!). In this session, we will discuss the issues you need to consider when choosing an e-mail management product, and explore the actual experiences of some of your colleagues.

Desktop Virtualization -Realizing Economies of Skill and Scale
While the benefits of virtualization for server applications has become widely adopted, one of the primary contributors to complexity and cost is the law firm user workstation. As the next generation of application delivery technologies mature, how can firms best leverage newer technologies such as application streaming along with continued innovations in thin-client technology? In this session we will explore some of the considerations for developing and adopting a “service oriented” user application workspace that may finally begin to deliver on the promise of a simplified workstation support environment while improving the user experience.

Something Has Changed: The Growing Importance of KM and Other Productivity Tools
It’s no secret that in the current economy, revenue growth has been weak, or non-existent. In response, firms are restructuring and drastically cutting expenses. But, cutting expenses alone is an unsustainable model—and won’t ultimately improve a firm’s financial position. In the midst of these fiscal pressures, it is also clear that the shift to alternate billing arrangements is a reality. Even if a small percentage of work is handled non-traditionally, the impact on how firm’s deliver services will be huge. An “All –Star” panel will discuss the changes in the market we operate, and the importance of KM and other tools as firms are increasingly pressed to perform work to fixed budgets and otherwise improve efficiencies as a means to driving
profitability.
Topics include:
• Tools for boosting profitability, while reducing work for attorneys and
increasing client satisfaction
• Using technology to work more efficiently -- reducing costs for both firms and clients

Strategic Planning for the Next 1-3 Years
In these cost conscious times, extending your planning horizon beyond next year’s budget can be an effective way to promote and gain acceptance for key technology initiatives. Creating a two or three year pipeline of initiatives can give management a heads up about future expenditures and help avoid sticker shock. Presenting your firm’s management with a longer planning horizon can also create opportunities to have a dialog about Firm strategy, how technology can align with those plans and how best to set priorities. This panel will be presenting practical approaches for developing and present long range plans and review the benefits of this approach.

The Changing IT Business Model
Current business requirements call for tightened IT budget and staffing. We often think in the context of what can we eliminate and still keep our operation intact. Current expectations require us to rethink this approach and consider the implementation of a new IT business model – a new approach to delivering IT support and services to the firm. We can no longer “do more with less,” we must change the way we operate. The current global economic dilemma is causing law firms to reconsider the business model that has been in place for the last 50 years. Just as law firms are rethinking the Firm’s business model, we must rethink the IT business model – much has changed.
Given the above, what can we consider? Centralization, virtualization, and outsourcing are all components of our current model, but will be more mportant in the future. Virtual desktops and thin-client technology add to our ability to continue to provide service while reducing “tech touches” – the number of times technology staff need to perform inefficient tasks. Learn what one firm is doing to not only do more with less, but reinvent their IT service model. The discussion includes addressing Firm culture and Technology allowances for lawyers – do you really need to be in the equipment business.

Luncheon and Presentation: The Power of Legal Chaining
Law firms and corporate legal departments face significant obstacles to achieving a fast and effective eDiscovery process. Law firms are often left with their hands tied while they wait for access to their corporate clients’ data. This session will explore Autonomy's unique chaining capability that allows law firms to link directly to relevant enterprise information for a particular matter or investigation, resulting in substantially compressed timeframes and costs associated with eDiscovery. This Discover-in-Place technology is delivered by a combination of Autonomy iManage content management and Autonomy Digital Safe, the world’s largest private cloud. With one, single powerful platform that covers every step in the EDRM, data can move transparently through the entire eDiscovery process, eliminating the need for inefficient hand-offs. This also allows law firms to provide new services to corporations such as early case assessment or outsourced legal hold, dramatically changing the landscape of corporate risk.

NYS Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Incentives for Technology Energy Efficiency Projects
Electricity use by technology and the costs associated continues to rise and cause greater impact to decision making around the deployment of new technologies. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) allocated $93 million dollars towards its program that provides incentives to reduce the energy consumption of these technologies. During this session, you will learn how projects such as virtualization for servers and desktops, server upgrades and improved cooling and air flow management are eligible to receive incentives to offset implementation costs.
